The United Republic of Tanzania is one of Africa’s most politically stable countries. It is home to Serengeti National Park and Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.
During the past decade, Tanzania recorded sustained economic growth and a persistent decline in poverty. The 2019 Tanzania Mainland Poverty Assessment notes that poverty decreased by eight percentage points in 10 years, down from 34.4% in 2007 to 26.4% in 2018.

However, Tanzania remains a poor country, with most of the population struggling as subsistence farmers. Although the poverty rate in the country has declined, the absolute number of poor has not.
Children represent more than 50% of Tanzania’s population. They face many challenges including malnutrition, violence, inadequate healthcare and education and other basic services. With high child mortality and a lack of access to basic services, there is much work to be done to help Tanzania’s children survive and thrive.
The 2016 Child Poverty in Tanzania report indicates that three out of every four children in Tanzania experience poverty. Child poverty indicators seem to be more prevalent in rural areas than it is in urban.
Some of the child’s rights that may not be met include food and water, as well as basic services, such as health care and education. In many cases children are deprived of these rights because they live in poor households which do not have enough income to afford the relevant needs or services.
Compassion International Tanzania is committed to working with church partners, families, communities, and the government of Tanzania in ‘releasing children from poverty’.
